2026 PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE OF DESIGN

LAUNDRY & CRAFT ROOM designed by Arterberry Cooke Architecture

This project takes an otherwise typical utilitarian space and transforms it into an elevated, multi-functional room that serves as a visual retreat, no longer hidden away. We incorporated cleverly planned millwork to allow for ample storage and counter space. The desk space encourages creative work for a painter or crafter, looking out at the San Gabriel mountains that loom majestically in the backyard. We were inspired by the beautiful vistas, selecting an earthy color palette to bring the outdoors in. Highlighting the bank of existing windows that bring in lots of natural light, we painted them in the Dunn-Edwards color of the year, Midnight Garden, to feature our nature-inspired approach to this space. Custom millwork in Rose Mauve and added details with elements of a bespoke era honor the home’s original owner from the 1920s, Clara Baldwin. We included decorative cutouts and stained glass inlay to add character and charm, along with stained glass panels in the upper cupboards to celebrate the play of light. Opulent accents, including a custom faucet with ceramic color-matched handles in Midnight Garden and semi precious stone cabinet hardware, all celebrate the glamour of Art Deco while pulling it into an updated context for today. The custom Fireclay tile design in bold geometric patterns serves as a playful ground to elevate the joy and creativity of the space. Lighting played a key role in the design of this highly-decorated space, and we used Kelly Wearstler alabaster lights from Visual Comfort to add additional artistic elements, blurring the lines between lighting and sculpture to offer sophistication and presence. We are glowing from the results where art and decoration continue to play into a balance of mundane and artistic and inspirational.
